Irish trio in NextGen Final victory this afternoon...01/04/2013
Aston Villa defeated Chelsea in an all English final of the 2013 European NextGen Series in Como, Italy this Easter Monday afternoon. Villa had Irish U21 internationals Samir Carruthers and Graham Burke, who both played against Portugal in Dundalk last Monday night, and Under 19 international Jack Grealish in their side, and it was Burke who gave his side the lead, from the penalty spot, four minutes into the second half. Victory was finally assured in the last minute when Burke was again on 'the spot' to score the second. Dubliner Burke ended the competition as top goalscorer with seven, just ahead of injured Kilkenny man Michael Drennan who scored six. Injured defenders Daniel Devine and Derrick Williams also made significant contributions in the early rounds of the competition.

Ireland suffer added time heartbreak in snowy Aviva ...26/03/2013
Ireland's hopes of a 2014 summer in Brazil took a potentially fatal blow in the second minute of added time at the Aviva Stadium tonight when Austria scored, to earn a 2-2 draw in this crucial World Cup 2014 qualifier. The visitors started well and looked much more technically competent than Ireland, but it was a horrendous mistake from Ciaran Clarke on eleven minutes which gifted the visitors the opening goal. Ireland restored some semblence of order primarily through the efforts of Shane Long, and the Tipperary man earned a penalty with his determination after 25 minutes which Jonathan Walters despatched with confidence. Walters was again the hero on the stroke of half time, when he guided his header, from an excellent Glen Whelan corner, inside the post, to give Ireland the lead. The second half was patchy but Ireland, primarily through the forward industry of Long, looked to be on their way to victory. The illogical substitution of Long with eight minutes remaining offered breathing space to the visitors and as too often has been the case under Trapattoni, Ireland retreated and paid the penalty with the concession of the late late equaliser.
